House of Representatives dismisses constitutional amendment bill in matters of electricity

In a session held on April 17, 2022, the House of Representatives voted on the constitutional amendment bill in matters of electricity presented by the Mexican President on September 30, 2021.
In order to be approved, Constitutional amendments require the favorable vote of a qualified majority of two thirds of the members present in both Chambers of the Congress, in addition to subsequently requiring the approval of a simple majority of the State Congresses.
In the session of the House of Representatives, 498 representatives voted, which in turn required the favorable vote of at least 332 representatives for the bill to be sent to the Senate for its discussion. With votes against the bill from a coalition formed by Partido Acción Nacional, Partido Revolucionario Institucional and Partido de la Revolución Democrática, as well as of Movimiento Ciudadano (223), and votes in favor of the bill from Movimiento Regeneración Nacional, Partido del Trabajo and Partido Verde Ecologista de México (275), the qualified majority was not reached and the bill was dismissed.
In his daily conference, the President stated that he will not seek to introduce any other constitutional amendment bill regarding electricity for the rest of his term, which ends in 2024.
